Every year, I encourage people to line up at the pumps and let me fill their tanks with gas. I'll even wash their windows and run their payments in for them. I don't do this just because I'm a nice guy - but, of course, I am a nice guy. But really, I do this for a cause. Did I mention there are prizes? I'll get to those in a little bit, but first...
The 7th Annual Gas Out Cancer event took place on Saturday, August 30th, between 5-7 pm. That day, I - along with other great people and volunteers - ran around pumping gas for the fine citizens of Brookings and anyone else who brings their vehicle to Schoon's Pump 'N Pak on 2103 Main Street South in Brookings. Gas was 21 cents off per gallon for the customers. My great sponsors helped me donate that 21 cents per gallon to Relay For Life.
This year, we pumped 1,900 gallons of gas in two hours raising nearly $550 for the organization. Any hourly workers getting paid $225 per hour?! Last year, the event was three hours and pumped 2,900 gallons - showing this event's consistency in fundraising for Relay For Life.
The people show up because they want to support the cause and they love getting discounted gas prices. A few of them even commented on the prizes that were available. (I told you we'd get to those.) We had two $50 Visa Gift Cards from Dakotaland Federal Credit Union and a Brookings Blizzard giveaway package that people could enter to win by filling their tanks.
It's a great event to get people involved in the community. For those who aren't aware, I'm a committee member with Relay For Life, a community-based fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. The organization is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities spanning more than 20 countries to fight cancer. All the proceeds from this Gas Out Cancer event go straight to them to aid in their efforts.
Last year, we combined the Brookings County Relay For Life group with the South Dakota State University Against Cancer group to make one big event for the year. The next Relay For Life event will be held in the Volstorff Ballroom on campus at SDSU on Saturday, March 29th at 5 pm.
