What are your responsibilities?
As a real estate agent, Shane is responsible for helping individuals buy and sell real estate. A role like this requires people skills and excellent customer service – both of which, Shane prides himself on. As technology evolves, so do realtors! Shane is always finding new ways to utilize modern technology for marketing/promoting properties.
How did you find your way to where you are today?
Mr. Andersen started working at a young age in the food service industry. He quickly learned that this particular industry is very demanding and manually intensive. This early working experience gave Shane the opportunity to grow his skillsets and discover his strengths. For example, many of the customer service aspects of food service help him in his everyday duties today.
What role has education and training played in your career path?
Shane has a high school education, but the school of hard knocks has helped prepare him for what he does now! As a real estate agent, you are required to have continuing education every 2 years. Some of the continuous learning comes from the everyday chores that are required to run his business.
What qualities or characteristics do you find are necessary to be successful in your role?
It’s hard, but attention to detail is extremely important in this role. Especially, when you are working with someone who is dealing with one of the most stressful and biggest financial processes they may ever do in their live. So, you have to be organized. “We all make mistakes, and believe me, I have (last year) but hopefully you learn from that and make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Shane shared.
How would you recommend someone interested in the same career/occupation pursue a similar path?
As a real estate agent, you have to be able to accept “NO” many times. Often, this can be challenging to hear because you invest your time and energy into each client (not knowing if your hard work will lead to a return). But it is absolutely worth it!
Shane explains, “This saying is probably used in other sales jobs, but an agent once told me that sometimes you eat the chicken, and sometimes you eat the feathers. Meaning that you don’t know when your next commission check is coming, so be sure you are financially set before getting into this type of work.”
What extracurricular activities helped you develop professionally?
Shane is involved in various committees and loves participating in community events. In fact, the more you can do to expose yourself, the better. Mr. Andersen encourages individuals to join any groups, committees or things like that will help you get recognized and build your network.
What is a typical salary range for someone starting in line of work?
You get out of it, what you are willing to put into it. Some agents do very well their first year, where others do not. Some are just part time, and some are full time, so it can range from $1000/yr to over $100,000/yr.
