Rocking our way through the summer with Downtown at Sundown
Summertime in Brookings is pretty special. Not only is there nice warm weather, but there’s also a great event called Downtown at Sundown. To sum it up in a quick elevator pitch, it features live music, local brews and food, kid friendly activities and a fun outdoor atmosphere. It takes place every Thursday night during July and August.
For the exact dates, you should check their website: www.downtownatsundown.org. This is an annual event going on five years already! It’s liked by so many it has become a community favorite and keeps coming back.
I can tell you, I’ve been to a couple of these Thursday concerts and thoroughly enjoyed them. Each week there is a different live band. They cover a lot of genres from old time to country to 80s to good ol’ rock and roll. Sometimes they even play some newer song that people recognize as well as throwing in some of their own original tunes. There’s really something for everyone when it comes to the music at this event.
But the music is only part of the experience. Another big part I enjoy is walking through the crowd and seeing people that I know or haven’t seen for a while. Sometimes, I even get to meet people and make new friends. It’s a great place to catch up with neighbors and get outside to enjoy the downtown Brookings atmosphere.
Did I mention this event is 100% FREE to anyone who wants to attend!? You don’t have to spend a dime if you don’t want to. But I’d suggest coming to the event hungry. They have food available at special prices from local vendors. Also, drink tickets available for those of legal age (they check you in and give you a wrist band to confirm you are of age) to test some local brews or sip your favorite beers.
Every Thursday, it starts at 5pm and goes until 9pm. There are bouncy houses and slides, face painting, and games for the kiddos. There are also some booths set up by local shops to sell merchandise as well as give extra exposure to their businesses located right here in Brookings.
Also, and this one is big for me, every week they promote a charitable organization. Each organization has a place on site for them to set up and talk with people about the specifics of what they do. It’s a great way to get additional exposure for their cause and I’m a huge fan of Downtown at Sundown for their support of these organizations.
There’s only one event left this summer - next week Thursday, August 22. If you like what you’ve read here, you should certainly make your best effort to make it to their last event. It’s a way to end your summer on a high note. I’m multitasking to try and clear my schedule right now so I can take part in the festivities!
This last one features the Nathan Dean Band from Arizona. They performed so well last year that they were invited back to close the event series this year. So, if you’re ready to listen to a little country and a little rock and roll, you should head on out to Downtown at Sundown. It’s a great family-friendly atmosphere and a good time for everyone!
