Tossing Beanbags at the Lynn Mennis Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser

Last month, I was honored to take part in the second annual Lynn Mennis Memorial Scholarship Beanbag Fundraiser. This year it was held on August 24 at The Wild Hare in Brookings and I can’t say enough about how great this event really is.

Nearly two years ago, Lynn suddenly and unexpectedly passed. Everyone loved him and he was a big part of communities throughout the state of South Dakota as the President of the state’s Home Builder’s Association at the time.

Since then, this tournament has been established to support high school and college students in Brookings and the surrounding area who are going into building trades and planning to work in South Dakota.

This year’s tournament featured beautiful weather, 14 teams, fantastic food, an abundance of sponsors and a bunch of fun. There was a suggested $5 donation for pulled pork sandwiches, chips and water – a meal donated by current board members. And it really hit the spot and gave me fuel for the tournament!

It was a double elimination tournament of two-player teams. We registered at 11am and started playing at noon. By 4pm we had a winner! Third place took home $100, second place received $150 and first place won $250. But the big winner was the scholarship for which we raised more than $1,700!

A special thanks to all of the sponsors for the event including The Wild Hare, Good Vinyl Graphics Company, Metal Sales Manufacturing Corporation, Bank Star Financial, Advanced Insulation Solutions, Houtman Construction, The Prairie Mermaid Boutique, SDSU Construction Management, Wagner Contracting, Brookings Rent-All, Homestead Do It Center and the Brookings Home Team.

It’s because of these sponsors and those who donated their time and effort to set up this tournament that we were able to raise this money in honor of Lynn. Many of Lynn’s family members and friends attended and played in the fundraiser.

Thank you to everyone who played in the tournament, donated or helped with the event in any way!  We hope to see you all again next year.
